The answer is in the difference in how they are made, the number of ingredients used, and in the total elderberry content available as well. As far as we have seen, Norm’s Farms is the only elderberry supplement company to offer both a true Pure Elderberry Extract and an Elderberry Wellness Syrup. Aside from our Pure Elderberry Extract, most other liquid elderberry supplements on the market are really syrups.
It is understandable then, that we are asked, “What is the difference between Elderberry Extract and Elderberry Wellness Syrup?” The answer is in the difference in how each are made and in the total elderberry content available as well.
An extract is created by using a solvent to attract and pull out the health-promoting phytochemicals in an herb or berry. The most common natural solvents include water, alcohol, glycerin and vinegar. The most potent extracts begin with two ingredients, the whole, fresh herb or berry and the solvent used to create the extract. Which solvent you use depends on the polarity of the phytochemical you are wanting to extract. The most valuable phytochemicals in elderberry are the antioxidant rich anthocyanins and because they are water soluble, water is the best solvent to use when creating an elderberry extract. And that is what we use.
Norm’s Farms Pure Elderberry Extract begins with fresh frozen whole elderberries grown on our family farms and water. Our proprietary method yields a concentrated elderberry extract with more antioxidants per serving than available in elderberry syrup preparations. The viscosity and taste of our elderberry extract is like what you would get if you ran any fresh fruit or vegetable through a juicer: intense bright flavor with a viscosity like apple juice. Every bottle of our Elderberry Extract is 100% elderberry with a tiny bit of malic acid to make it shelf stable and safe for bottling. Norm’s Farms Elderberry Extract may just be the most natural and most powerful elderberry supplement you can buy.
All elderberry syrups contain more ingredients than an elderberry extract and have less elderberry available per serving. As the name implies, a syrup contains either natural or artificial sweeteners or thickeners to give it a sweeter, syrupy texture. When comparing elderberry syrups, it is important to read the label to see what ingredients are in it. Most elderberry syrups contain glucose syrup, fructose, glycerin or sugar as a thickener, preservatives like potassium sorbate and many contain other fruit juices too.
Norm’s Farms Elderberry Bee Wellness Syrups begin with our Pure Elderberry Extract, made from our farm fresh elderberries as opposed to the processed, dried and powdered elderberry so common in elderberry supplements available today. To that we add honey thinned with water, cloves, cinnamon and a touch of malic acid. The honey acts as a natural preservative, the cloves are a natural analgesic (great for scratchy throats) and the cinnamon has natural antibiotic properties.
