Ira Planer Norm's Farms
Ira Planer has been working with us at Norm’s Farms for years now. Perhaps you’ve seen him with us at a festival or fair or trade show over the years? Those of you who live in and around the Raleigh and RTP NC areas have perhaps run into him at stores demoing our products too. Ira and I were trying to remember how we met; was it at the NC Hops and Roots Festival that Ira directed for 5 years? Or maybe it was at the Pittsboro First Sunday street fair back when Norm’s Farms used to be regular vendor? Perhaps it was at the Coffee Barn Stage over at Shakori Hills? The fact that we can’t remember how we met is not that surprising really; we instantly hit it off and its hard to remember a time when we didn’t know each other. Ira has been a big part of Norm’s Farms from its earliest days and, in the beginning, often volunteered to help us at Wide Open Bluegrass, Merle Fest and other fun music related vending events for Norm’s Farms. As Norm’s Farms grew, we began hiring Ira to help us at trade shows. Ira loves our products and people, too, so having his help in the booth was a God-send. Before long we were paying Ira to help us at shows, and Ira was earning commissions when he helped us establish new accounts. It was with huge relief and great pleasure that we were recently able to hire Ira full time at Norm’s Farms. Ira, like Sean, is an Elderberry Ambassador and a Positive Vibes Technician, and Norm’s Farms is super lucky to have him!

Ira was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia and attended Georgia State University where he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing. After graduating, Ira founded Ira Planer and Associates, a company that represented 5 different apparel lines and sold clothing throughout the US. Ira’s business flourished for over a decade. While Ira was running his business, he married and over time had three daughters; Sara, Hanna, and Eliana, who are now aged 25, 22 and 18 respectively. While the business was great, it required that he be on the road almost all the time and in 2000, Ira closed up shop so that he could spend more time with his daughters. Ira found his next career at Burriss Amps & Q-Lighting, a business that sold amps and lighting equipment to musicians, theaters, restaurants, auditoriums and other venues. Q-Lighting was one of the first companies in the US to make and sell LED lighting for music stands. Ira worked for Burriss Amps and Q-Lighting for a long time until he met us at Norm’s Farms and discovered his next passion, elderberry!

Ira’s passions-besides having one for elderberry-include camping, playing guitar, attending live music events, and directing music festivals and street fairs. Ira was the founder of the NC Hops and Roots Festival that celebrated and brought together local producers of beer, food and music for a very fun two-day festival in Chatham County, NC. Ira is also credited with resurrecting the struggling First Sunday street fair in Pittsboro, NC, which he turned into a great success and ran for many years. Now that Ira’s daughters are either off in college or working and living independently, he is excited to be travelling again for Norm’s Farms. Ira recently returned from a sales trip in Virginia and will be hitting the road again soon for a trip down south. Ira continues to demo for Norm’s Farms too; if you run into Ira at a store or on the road, we hope you’ll take a moment to say hi!
