Haw River Farmhouse Ales Does Elderberry!
Haw River Farmhouse Ales, owned by Ben and Dawnya Woodword, is a micro-brewery situated in the gorgeous old mill-town of Saxapahaw, NC. Located in the lower section of the old mill, Haw River Farmhouse Ales produces notable ales, stouts, saisons, IPAs and more year-round from locally sourced ingredients. Ben and Dawnya started the Farmhand Exchange Program about the same time they opened their brewery - late 2014- to connect local producers to local ingredients, and, as a result, have been an opportunity catalyst for growers and producers alike throughout the Piedmont area of NC. The brews coming out of Haw River Farmhouse Ales truly reflect the local community, and that community is a proud supporter of Haw River Farmhouse Ales! The wild blackberries and persimmons Ben and his head brewer, Chase, use in their sours come from Happy Chick Farm just a few miles up the road. In the fall they reach out to Bushy Tail Farms for the Cinderella pumpkins used in their seasonal Winter Harvest saison and pumpkin ales. They source hops for some of their year-round brews from Piedmont Hops, ginger from East Branch Ginger, and, we are proud to say, elderberry and

elderflower from Norm’s Farms! Our elderberries and elderflowers are featured in this season’s first edition of Haw River Farmhouse Ales’ Cultural Divide series, so named for the yogurt used in the fermentation process.  Ben and Chase craft a series of limited special saisons each summer using locally sourced fruits and vegetables. This year they also plan to make a saison using wild cherries and another one using locally grown cucumbers. The first thing you notice about the Cultural Divide saison featuring our elderberries and elderflowers is the brilliant purple color. Like saisons of old, the beer is light and crisp and not a bit sweet. The flavor is amazing; notes of berry with a tangy yet creamy finish, this limited-edition beer is perfect served cold on a hot summer afternoon. You can find Cultural Divide with Elderberry and Elderflower at bottle shops, independent co-ops and pubs throughout North Carolina. You can find a complete listing of stores carrying Haw River Farmhouse Ales here. If you happen to be within driving distance of Saxapahaw, I highly recommend a day trip to the village with a visit to the Haw River Farmhouse Ales tasting room!  The tasting room is open most afternoons and evenings.  Don’t wait too long! This limited edition run produced just 3000 cans and a smaller number of kegs so it won’t be around long. If you are lucky enough to get your hands on a can of the amazing Cultural Divide with Elderberry and Elderflower, we'd love to know what you think!  Cheers and Healthy Happy Hour to all!
